Trey Smith brings nearly two decades of litigation experience to Simmons Smith Mercier & Harris. He is licensed to practice in all of Mississippi's federal and state courts.

During law school, Mr. Smith served as a law clerk to Mississippi's 61st Governor, Kirk Fordice where he researched and briefed a myriad of legal issues related to the Governor's legislative and overall policy agendas. Prior to the formation of Simmons Smith Mercier & Harris, He was a partner at Page Kruger & Holland where he counseled and defended hospitals, clinics, physicians, nurses and other healthcare providers against medical malpractice claims. Having litigated complex malpractice cases involving misdiagnoses, wrongful deaths, permanent injuries, medication errors, and birth injuries he has developed a strong understanding of the complexities of medical malpractice claims. In addition to litigation, he has assisted medical clients with the development of internal policies and procedures, employee contracts, insurance disputes, and general business negotiations.

From 2007-2010, Mr. Smith served as Senior Counsel for the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality ("MDEQ") where he represented MDEQ before the Mississippi Commission on Environmental Quality and the Mississippi Environmental Permit Board. He litigated matters involving both environmental compliance and environmental permitting. In private practice, Mr. Smith has also represented environmental clients with compliance and permitting issues.

Mr. Smith is a member of the Mississippi Bar Association, the American Bar Association, Mississippi Defense Lawyers Association, the Defense Research Institute, and the Mississippi Oil and Gas Lawyers Association. He is a member of the Mississippi Bar Committees for Health Law and Natural Resources, Environment & Energy ("SONREEL"), which he chaired in 2013.
